Why the Map Pack matters more than a page-one ranking, what actually moves it, and a realistic timeline for seeing results.
If you run a trade, a clinic, a real estate agency or any business that serves a local area, the three or four listings that show up under the map when someone searches “electrician near me” or “dentist Broadbeach” matter more than almost anything else you do online. That’s the Map Pack, and it’s where most of your next customers are looking before they’ve even opened a website.
A blue-link ranking on page one is worth something. A Map Pack listing is worth more, because it shows up above those links, with your phone number, your reviews and a “call now” button already visible. For a service business, that’s the difference between a click and a phone call.
It’s also the only channel that compounds. Run ads and the leads stop the day you stop paying. Build genuine authority in the Map Pack and it keeps working in the background. That’s why, across our client base, Local SEO consistently delivers the lowest long-term cost per lead of any channel we run.
Three things do almost all of the work.
Hours, categories, services, photos: all of it needs to be complete, accurate and actively maintained. An outdated or half-filled-in profile is the single most common reason a good business doesn’t show up for its own core service.
Reviews are one of the top three ranking factors for Google Maps, not just star rating, but quantity, recency, and how consistently they come in. A business that gets two or three new reviews a month will out-rank a better business that hasn’t had a new review since last year. This is why a systematic review-generation process (not just hoping happy customers remember to leave one) needs to be part of any real Local SEO campaign.
Consistent name, address and phone number details across the top local directories, paired with content that actually mentions the suburbs you service, tells Google exactly where you operate and for what. Generic “we service the whole region” copy doesn’t do this job nearly as well as a proper suburb-by-suburb build-out.
Most businesses see measurable Map Pack movement within 60–90 days of a proper foundation build (profile optimisation, citation cleanup, review system, priority landing pages). Broader organic ranking improvements tend to follow in months three to six. Anyone promising overnight results either doesn’t understand how this works or isn’t being straight with you.
It’s also worth knowing this is a compounding channel. Unlike ads, the gains don’t evaporate the moment you pause. That’s exactly why we encourage clients to commit to at least six months: it’s roughly the point where the return starts to clearly outweigh anything paid ads could deliver at the same spend.
Often, yes. The two channels solve different problems. Ads deliver leads immediately while the SEO foundation is still being built; once organic rankings are strong, ad spend can be scaled back or redirected toward higher-margin services. Most of the service businesses we work with who run both report a lower blended cost per lead than either channel manages on its own.
Your customers search for you locally. If you’re a trade, a clinic, a law firm or almost any service business, they definitely do. The Map Pack is the highest-leverage piece of real estate you’re not fully occupying yet. It takes a genuine 90-day foundation build to get moving, but unlike paid traffic, it doesn’t switch off the moment you stop paying attention to it.
