Whitespark’s latest survey highlights what matters for Google Maps, local website results and AI search. Here’s where a local business should focus first.
If your business depends on customers nearby, local search can feel unpredictable. You might appear in Google Maps for one suburb and disappear a few streets away. A competitor with a simpler website might show above you.
Whitespark’s 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors report helps explain where local SEO specialists believe the strongest signals lie. It separates Google Maps results, local website results, AI search visibility and the factors that help turn a searcher into a customer.
It is a useful guide to priorities, with one important limit: the survey records expert judgement. Google says its local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence, and does not publish the exact weighting of its ranking systems. Google’s local ranking guidance
Whitespark’s specialists ranked the primary Google Business Profile category first for Google Maps and local pack visibility. That makes the category a sensible place to start an audit.
Choose the category that describes what the business is, then add only relevant secondary categories. A plumber who also installs hot water systems should check that their main category reflects the core business, rather than selecting categories simply because they contain attractive search terms. Google’s category guidelines call for specific categories that genuinely represent the business.
Check the rest of the profile while you are there: services, opening hours, contact details and map pin. Accurate information helps customers as well as search visibility.
The survey ranked distance from the searcher second for Maps results. This explains why one business can rank well near its premises but less well across town. Improving your profile and website is worthwhile, but it cannot move your physical location closer to every potential customer.
For businesses that travel to customers, do not show a residential address just because the survey associates a visible address with stronger rankings. Google says service area businesses without a customer facing storefront should hide their address. Follow the Business Profile rules for how your business actually operates.
If you have genuine, staffed locations in different areas, each location may need its own accurate profile and useful website page. A virtual office or an invented location is not a shortcut.
Google ratings, the number of written reviews and review recency all placed highly in Whitespark’s Maps rankings. High ratings and positive review text also ranked strongly in its separate conversion survey.
That distinction matters. A review programme should help someone decide whether to call you, not just chase a position on a map. Make it easy for customers to leave honest feedback, respond helpfully and keep earning reviews over time. Avoid treating a sudden batch of reviews as a substitute for consistent service.
For local organic results, the survey ranked a dedicated page for each service first. Geographic relevance, relevant links and internal linking also placed highly.
This gives a service business a practical website task: make sure its main services are easy to find and understand. A good page explains the work, who it is for, where the business can genuinely provide it and what happens when a customer enquires. Link related pages together so visitors can move from a broad service to the detail they need.
That is more useful than producing dozens of near identical suburb pages that only swap the place name.
For the first time, Whitespark asked specialists to assess AI search visibility. They rated appearances on credible curated lists, dedicated service pages, relevant industry websites and substantial third party mentions highly.
This part of the survey needs particular care. Different AI products use different sources, and the report’s author notes that scoring a single “AI search” factor across them is ambiguous. It is too early to promise that one directory listing or website change will make a business appear in every AI answer.
The practical approach is to make your business easy to verify across your own website and reputable sources that matter to your industry. Accurate service information, genuine reviews and credible mentions have value beyond any one search interface.
For most local service businesses, this is a sensible order:
The survey is most useful as a way to choose what to investigate. Your own enquiries, calls and bookings should tell you whether the work is helping the business.
