Most tradie marketing advice lists channels. This is the real sequence: attention, trust, enquiry, follow-up, sale, and why the order actually matters.
Most tradies run some mix of Google Ads, a bit of social media, and hoping the reviews keep coming in. None of that is wrong by itself. What’s missing is the order it needs to happen in, and which one of those is quietly wasted without the others in place first. Here’s that order, from a stranger who’s never heard of you to a job on the calendar.

Nobody searches for a hot water repair until their hot water’s already broken. The job of this stage is being visible the moment that happens, mainly through the Google Map Pack rather than the plain blue links below it, since that’s where most local searches actually convert. We’ve covered the specifics of what actually moves Map Pack rank in our local SEO guide. A Google Business Profile Offer is also worth ten minutes of setup here, since it’s free and can show up directly in Google’s AI search results. Here’s how to set one up.
Getting found only matters if you win the three-way comparison that happens next. That’s almost entirely reviews and how recent and specific they are, and increasingly it’s not just Google reviews anymore, since AI search tools now pull from other platforms too. We’ve gone into why relying on one review platform is risky in 2026 in a separate post, worth a read alongside this one.
Local SEO and reviews are the slow-build channel. Google Ads is the lever for turning demand into leads right now, on a specific service, in a specific area, without waiting months to rank. The catch is that most accounts we see waste 40 to 60% of budget on clicks that were never going to convert, almost always down to setup, not the platform. This is the step most tradies skip straight past, and it’s the one that decides who actually gets the job. Most jobs go to whoever responds first, not whoever’s best. If a call goes unanswered or a quote sits with no follow-up, that lead often just books with someone else. We’ve written about what missed calls actually cost and how automated follow-up fixes it. This is the highest-leverage, cheapest-to-fix step in the whole sequence: spending on the first three steps without it is wasted effort.

Everything above exists to get to this point: a quote accepted and a job booked in. If a business is strong here but weak at any step before it, the fix is earlier in the sequence, not more of whatever’s already working.
Spending on ads before the Google listing and reviews are solid means paying to send people to a page that loses the comparison. Chasing more reviews while calls go unanswered on weekends means paying for trust that never gets contacted. The businesses getting the best return aren’t doing more marketing, they’re doing marketing that follows this order, so nothing generated at the top gets wasted before it becomes a job.
